Our Past Projects in Year 2008-2009

The year 2008-09 was full of new experiences and learning for the organization. Many new and innovative activities have been started in the target area. During the financial year 2008-09, following programmes / activities were undertaken and implemented / organized by the organization:

Vocational Training

SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI runs vocational training programme for youth & adolescents. These vocational trainings are being provided to the beneficiaries at vocational training centres established in target areas. Well-trained and experienced instructors are teaching beneficiaries in the vocational training centers. SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI has been conducting these vocational training sessions for adolescents of poor, deprived and neglected section of the society since it’s establishment. Organization has expertise to conduct vocational training programme as it has long experience in the same field. Following table gives a brief vocational training programme run by the organization: 

Health & family welfare programme

·Pulse Polio : Organization participates in all Pulse Polio Days in coordination with Health Department and local authority in it’s working area. In all polio days organization holds immunization camps. Community workers visits households door to door to remind mothers to get their kids below 5 immunized at the immunization booth.

·RCH Programme : SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI  has been working in the field of RCH in rural and urban areas. Various activities are being organized to make women as well as men aware about Anti Natal and Post Natal Care.

·Safe Drinking Water Awareness Programme : SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI  works to make people aware about the importance of Safe Drinking Water. Awareness messages are being given to the people through community meetings and door to door visits. 

·Immunization Programme : SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI  works to promote immunization of every child in its working areas. It takes part in all pulse polio immunization day in coordination with government. Through health centre run by SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI, immunization done on routine basis. Time to time SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI organizes free immunization camps in the area. During the period 2004-07 there are 16 free immunization camps organized for children below 5 years.

·Community meetings on health issues : Community meetings are being organized in the target areas. The purpose behind these meetings is to make people aware about various aspects of health and hygiene related issues. The community health workers are the key persons for organizing these health meetings in their respective communities. Some times external resource persons also facilitate the community health meetings. During the period of 2004-07 there are 39 community health meeting organized in the working areas in which various issues related to general health, maternal & child health, hygiene, eye care, importance of breast feeding, sexual transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS are being covered.

·Eye Care : Organization organizes eye care camps in it’s target areas. Awareness through meetings and health talks regarding taking care of eye are done on regular basis. Through charitable clinic information and counselling are being provided to the patients about eye care.

·Food & Nutrition : SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI  organizes camps and women’s meeting for making them aware about food and nutrition. Awareness about how to make nutritious food at home and benefits of nutritious food for women and children are being created in the community through camps and meetings.

Rural Development Programme

Under the rural development activities, SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI organizes various awareness activities to make villagers aware. Main purpose behind organizing these various awareness events is to make people conscious about their rights and duties. Methods for making people aware being used are street plays, community meetings, puppet shows, group discussion, video shows and rally. Organization creates awareness on following issues: 

• Awareness on Environmental Protection

• Awareness against Female Feticide

• Awareness on Food & Nutrition

• Awareness on Women Rights

• Awareness on Worker’s Education and Labour Laws

• Awareness on Right to Shelter

• Awareness on Save Water

Panchayati Raj Awareness Programme : To make democratic system more stronger it is very important to make every citizen aware about their rights. SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI  has been creating awareness among people about the Panchayti Raj system and it’s benefits for making democracy more stronger.

Literacy Programme

SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI  runs literacy centres to educate illiterate adults. This programme is for those who are totally illiterate and willing to learn. Adults are being provided basic education through this literacy programme. This is very helpful for those who are willing to learn. After attending literacy classes beneficiaries start reading books and writing their own names and letters to relatives.  Those who were putting thump impression on documents, they start signing after becoming literate through literacy programme. Organization runs 5 centres for literacy classes.

Non-formal School for Children of unorganized labours

SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI  has been running non-formal schools for the children of unorganized workers in Bhagalpur, Bihar. There are 196 children benefiting from the programme.

Consumer Awareness Camp

Awareness on consumer rights is another activity which is found very effective in making people aware in the target area. Community worker organized consumer awareness activities through various methods like through street meetings, plays and Nukkad Sabha.  

SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI  works for protecting following rights of consumers :

1. Right to Safety
Means right to be protected against the marketing of goods and services, which are hazardous to life and property. The purchased goods and services availed of should not only meet their immediate needs, but also fulfil long term interests.

Before purchasing, consumers should insist on the quality of the products as well as on the guarantee of the products and services. They should preferably purchase quality marked products such as ISI, AGMARK, etc. 

2. Right to be informed
Means right to be informed about the quality, quantity, potency, purity, standard and price of goods so as to protect the consumer against unfair trade practices.

Consumer should insist on getting all the information about the product or service before making a choice or a decision. This will enable him to act wisely and responsibly and also enable him to desist from falling prey to high pressure selling techniques.

3. Right to Choose
Means right to be assured, wherever possible of access to variety of goods and services at competitive price. In case of monopolies, it means right to be assured of satisfactory quality and service at a fair price.

It also includes right to basic goods and services. This is because unrestricted right of the minority to choose can mean a denial for the majority of its fair share. This right can be better exercised in a competitive market where a variety of goods are available at competitive prices.

4. Right to be heard
Means that consumer's interests will receive due consideration at appropriate forums. It also includes right to be represented in various forums formed to consider the consumer's welfare. The Consumers should form non-political and non-commercial consumer organizations which can be given representation in various committees formed by the Government and other bodies in matters relating to consumers.

5. Right to seek redressal
Means right to seek redressal against unfair trade practices or unscrupulous exploitation of consumers. It also includes right to fair settlement of the genuine grievances of the consumer. Consumers must make complaint for their genuine grievances. Many a times their complaint may be of small value but its impact on the society as a whole may be very large. They can also take the help of consumer organizations in seeking redressal of their grievances.

6. Right to Consumer Education
Means the right to acquire the knowledge and skill to be an informed consumer throughout life. Ignorance of consumers, particularly of rural consumers, is mainly responsible for their exploitation. They should know their rights and must exercise them. Only then real consumer protection can be achieved with success.

HIV/AIDS Awareness

SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI  works to spread awareness about HIV/AIDS among people particularly among youth & MWRA (Men & Women of reproductive Age) through group meeting and training workshops among youth. SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI  organizes training workshops for youth and NGO workers in different areas. Various other awareness activities like Street Play, Puppet Show and Quiz are being organized from time to time in the target area. These are the regular activities. Yet organization has not begun any targeted intervention project in the field of HIV/AIDS but it is planned to be initiated in the near future.

Drug de-addiction Programme

Under Drug De-addiction Programme SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI  organizes orientation and training programmes among youth. Various awareness activities are also being organized for making young people aware about the danger of uses of drugs. Organization organizes awareness camps from time to time to spread awareness. Organization has a dream to establish a drug de-addiction centre in it’s working area so that more intensive care and support can be provided to the victims of drug abuse.

Environmental Education Programme

Environmental Awareness Activity : SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI  works for creating awareness among common people about environmental protection. It has organized various small activities on environment. Painting competition, exhibition, talks, march (rally), public meeting, group discussion among students, essay competition and speech competition are major activities which are being organized for generating awareness for environmental protection.

Plantation : Organization organizes campaign for plantation under which forestation on empty lands are being done. This is organized in coordination with community youth and women. Though this campaign awareness on benefits of greenery and plantation for our lives and for protection of the environment is being created among the people.

Social Justice for Handicapped and Widows

Handicapped Awareness Camp: Generally handicapped children and widows are considered as burden in the society. There is no suitable educational and Rehabilitation infrastructure for handicapped children. SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI  creates awareness among common people for giving love & care to the handicap children and widows. SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI has been conducting awareness and support related activities in it’s working area to make differently able people more efficient and empowered. Organization organizes awareness camps for handicapped people. Through various activities organization make people aware about the government facilities and schemes for handicapped people. SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI provides supports to differently able people to get disability certificate, wheel chairs, limps and hearing aid.

Annual Sports Programme

For promoting games and sports, SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI works among youth of its working areas. It organizes tournament, game competitions to motivate youth to take part in sports and games more actively and with more enthusiasm. Organization awards best players and to the best team so that increase the level of motivation among them as well as to give some reorganization to their spirit and enthusiasm

Women’s Training Programme

Formation of Women Groups : 55 SHGs have been formed in the working areas and all are functioning smoothly. Self Help Groups are formed among men & women both. There are 546 beneficiaries are being covered under this programme. 

Women & Youth Groups : SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI has formed women’s and Young Girls groups in various areas. These groups are being formed with the view to cater different audience with special attention        

Awareness Generation Camp: Various awareness generation camps among women have been organized during financial year 2004-07.

Animal Welfare Programme

Animal Welfare is one of the important programmes of the organization. SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI  organizes various camps to make people aware about the animal welfare. In the age of globalization and commercialization people are becoming very busy in earning money and no body pays attention towards protection and support to the animals around us.

SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI  works to make people aware about care and support to the animals. Organization organizes awareness camps, painting competition and quiz contest for making aware about animal welfare. 

Orphan Children Programme

Child welfare is one of the major activities of organization, which is being conducted for a long time. Free education of deprived children, Awareness and various extra co-curriculum activities are being organized under this component. Following are the broad activities of Child Welfare component:

Free Education to deprived and orphan children : SOPHIE JAN    KALYAN SAMITI  provides free education to underprivileged and       deprived children in it’s working areas. Organization believes that          education is a right not a privilege. SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI       reaches to the all families where children are not going to the school. After having discussion and counseling with the parents, children are being given         admission in the educational centers run by the organization. SOPHIE JAN   KALYAN SAMITI feels that education is right of every child so every         child    must be in the school. Free study material and stationery are also      provided to those students whose parents cant not afford these expenses.   

Welfare of Street Children : Apart from those children who are living with their parents there are many children who live on the streets and having no shelter. Organizations works for street and working children for providing them clothes and food. We conduct awareness camps among street and working children for improving their quality of life. Generally these camps are themed on general health issues, personal hygiene issues, benefits of saving (money), literacy, communal harmony and communicable diseases.

Farmer’s Awareness Programme

SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI works for creating awareness among farmers which includes awareness about Organic farming, Use of new technology in agriculture and providing knowledge and information about different government schemes for farmers and rural development

Advocacy & Networking

SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI has been part of issue-based campaigns and networks and it has strategic alliances with various advocacy movements and networks working on different social, environmental and developmental issues.

SOPHIE JAN KALYAN SAMITI attempts to address the issues of abysmal living conditions of poorest of the poor. And, human rights violations of Women, Dalits, Tribals, Destitute, Children, Homeless, Elderly, and Differently Able People.  

The Constitutional mandate and various UN Covenants and Conventions, which have been committed to the efforts of Human Dignity and protection of Human Rights, yet we have been witnessing flagrant violation of the Constitutional provisions and the UN mandate for a long time now.
